Karachi: In an incident that shocked the city, senior journalist
Murtaza Razvi was found murdered at the studio of an artist friend in
DHA on Thursday morning. The body of the 48-year-old Magazines Editor,
Dawn, was found in a flat located in what is popularly known as Khadda
or Delton’s Market in the Darakhshan police limits and police claimed he
had been strangled to death.
The news of Razvi’s death spread like wildfire through the city, and family, friends and colleagues of the mild-mannered journalist were stunned by the news.Station House Officer Mobin of Darakhshan police station said that, after receiving information about the incident, they went to the scene of the crime where they found Razvi lying dead on the floor of the flat. They called in the rescue teams and shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). According to police, his body bore marks of violence and he had been strangled with the help of a drawstring (azarband).
The police sealed the flat to preserve the evidence and called in the finger-printing and forensics staff as part of the investigation. The flat from which his body was recovered belonged to artist Shahid Rassam who used it as his studio. Rassam is helping the police with the investigation.
SHO Mobin said that during inspection of the flat, the police found a glass which was broken into pieces. He added that the deceased was found with his hands tied up. He also revealed that the journalist’s cell phone and personal belongings were missing. SHO Mobin said that it is premature to confirm any motive behind the murder before a post-mortem report. A case had been registered and investigations were under way. Razvi was married, to journalist Shehrazade Samiuddin, and they have three daughters. The journalist’s funeral will be held at Jama Masjid Yasrab in Phase 4, DHA, after juma prayers on Friday.
