JI accuses media of promoting nudity, vulgarity

Karachi: Jamaat-e Islami (JI) Karachi chief Muhammad Hussain Mehnati has expressed concern over the alleged spread of nudity and vulgarity in the Pakistani media, also asking the cable operators to stop airing Hindi films.
In a statement issued here on Monday, Mehnati alleged that the Pakistani print and electronic Media had deliberately destroyed the image of Islamic ideology and Pakistani culture by incorporating vulgarity in commercials, news bulletin and plays.
The statement claimed that some influential elements in the Pakistani media were hell-bent upon replacing the traditional culture with ‘Western and Hindu’ values, and were trying to brainwash the country’s youth.

“The bounty of vulgar dialogues, obscene and nude presentation of characters in TV commercials and the focus on crime stories that are based on corruption, are all part of an attempt to mesmerise the minds of the youth and ruin Pakistani society,” he claimed.
Mehnati believes that the psychological effects of such content had only begun to show its negativity. “The flood of nudity and vulgarity in the Pakistani media has been exacerbated by outdoor advertisers,” he said.
He said that fashion show organisers and their patrons in TV channels and fabric manufacturing companies presented women as a “cheap commodity,” but that Islam held women in high status and esteem.
