‘Media growth linked with lack of journalistic ethics’

Advocacy group asks journalists to improve working of media houses, adopt citizen friendly policies
LAHORE – A research-based advocacy and consultancy group has said that there is a need to engage with journalists to improve working of media houses and to make it more citizens friendly despite the fact that the media sector in Pakistan is growing day-by-day.

“We all can feel that citizen journalism is a growing phenomenon globally and we have to consider this as an important tool to strengthen our society and democracy,” said Farhan Khalid of the Individualland Pakistan – an Islamabad-based group – at a roundtable discussion – attended by senior journalists and some lawmakers.

– Dependence on corporate entities –

During discussion, speakers said that the electronic media of Pakistan has witnessed an unhindered growth since its liberalisation from the beginning of the new century. “This, however, unprecedented growth is often linked with a lack of journalistic ethics in theory and practice of media houses,” they said.

Some journalists were of the view that growing dependence on corporate entities and their increasing stake in the media industry has fast tracked the production of news. However, the increasing competition and race to break the news before the other media group often compromise the quality of news, they said.

– Responsible media –

The lawmakers said that such events were a great learning experience for journalists as well as parliamentarians and help them in the discussion of their issues and solutions to make the media more responsible. They appreciated efforts of the advocacy and consultancy group in organising the roundtable session on media and stressed such discussions should continue in the future to improve role of the media and in making it more responsible.
