Luton Council of Faiths has condemned both a controversial anti-Islam film and the violence that it has provoked.
The video, which was made in the US and posted on YouTube, sparked violent demonstrations among Muslims in several countries.
A
statement released by the Council of Faiths said: “We, as people of
faith, are truly shocked by the ridicule and vilification of the Prophet
of Islam who is held with deepest love, affection and reverence by
Muslims.
“It is a matter of shame and a challenge for us all that
in the name of freedom of expression and free speech deep and grievous
emotional hurt has been caused to over a billion-and-a-half Muslims in
the world, many of whom are our neighbours and fellow citizens.
“On the other hand, we also strongly condemn the killing of innocent people in revenge for the making of this film. These killings are, of course, an offence to Islam itself in that the sanctity of life is central to all religions.”
