UK triples Chevening scholarships for Pakistan

70 Chevening scholarships on offer
LAHORE: The Chevening Scholarship programme has nearly tripled the number of scholarship places for Pakistan by offering around 70 such opportunities for the academic year 2015-2016.
This was stated by Chevening Scholarship Pakistan programme head Jonathan Williams during a presentation held at the Pearl Continental Hotel on Monday.
The British High Commission held the presentation session in collaboration with the Lahore Press Club.

Williams said that the scholarship offered post graduate academic qualification to students. “So far, the scholarship has produced more than 43,000 scholars globally. This includes around 1,300 Pakistanis. The purpose of the session is to raise awareness regarding the scholarship, especially among journalists,” he said.

The Chevening Scholarship programme is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is a global scholarship programme offering scholarships to students in more than 150 countries. The programme also offers part or full funding of postgraduate-level studies in various disciplines in universities in England.
Shahla Qayyum, the Chevening Pakistan programme deputy head, talked about the application and selection procedure. “The scholarship programme started in 1983. In Pakistan, it started in the early nineties. Last year, over 2,400 people applied for the scholarship from Pakistan. Usually, 20 scholarships are offered every year. However, we have tripled the number for the academic year 2015-2016. Journalism and media studies have emerged as one of the several popular subjects taken up from Pakistan,” she said.
Speaking at the session, Arshad Ansari, the Lahore Press Club president, said that the programme offered students, especially journalists, an opportunity to enhance their professional skills.
