NDMA and PEMRA guide the Journalists on disastar reporting













During the two-day (August 5-6) media workshop, key speakers including former Chairman NDMA Lt Gen (Retd) Nadeem Ahmed, Director General (DG) Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Mukhtar Ahmed, and others addressed the participants of the workshop. The participants were journalists of various media houses of the capital city.

At the end of the workshop, Chairman NDMA Maj General Saeed Aleem interacted with the media persons during Iftar dinner before he took part in the photo session along with the participants of the workshop. He said that media role was very crucial in the dissemination of information before and after any natural calamity and disaster. He also viewed the government was fully equipped to cope with the situation arising as a result of heavy rains as predicted in September, this year.

Earlier, Idrees Mahsud giving his lecture on ‘Essentials of DRR (disaster risk reduction) and Role of Media’ said that disaster reporting has become a speciality of reporting in journalism like other specialities in the field of journalism and the reporters should be very careful while reporting in disastrous areas. He also sensitised the reporters about the terms of disaster risk management and disaster risk reduction. He gave a brief summary of the losses caused due to floods and other calamities that country had to face since its establishment in 1947.
Director General (DG) PEMRA Mukhtar Ahmed in his address sensitised the participants about the existing PMRA ordinance and rule and regulations of the authority. He also informed them about the powers of the authority to issue a licence of any broadcast media and its powers to monitor the contents of the electronic media broadcast.
Brigadier Sajid Naeem and another senior officer of NDMA during the interactive session informed that formal media team headed by an officer of information group had been notified under the directions of the Prime Minister’s office and that would keep the media updated in the next coming days about the rain as well as flood situation.
